Documentation of installation at “I Promise You…” (2020) — A3, Inkjet colour print on 120gsm paper from the stationers, framed with Gold gaffer tape.
Interim Show; “I Promise You…” (2020)
This work, which formed part of a group exhibition at Apiary Studios, London, sought to invite audience interaction by placing an icon of the Madonna and Child in the entryway to another part of the gallery, forcing a response from the audience in the gallery.
The work is at odds with itself, Holy imagery made out of mass-produced materials, shoddily made. It is in this conflict where people’s reactions to the work became part of the work itself. Some people avoided trampling, some trampled with glee. We tend to learn, invariably, that artworks hanging on walls are not to be touched, that this is verboten. This relationship we have with images, with art, and with material becomes immediately part of the work through the installation, encouraging reflection on the way we venerate an image.
